Sidewalk Style – Week 24 With Raijanne

Jun, 13th, 2015

Raijanne’s birthday was a couple days earlier. Her and her boyfriend were headed to Gastown to celebrate. She chose the dress because she liked the feminine feel of lace. More importantly the cut made it easy for dancing!

Shayna Ding Miss Asian Vancouver 2015, My Sidewalk Shoot With…

May, 10th, 2015

1 day before her trim!
14″ hair donation
I had the opportunity to photograph and interview 22 year old Shayna Ding on Mother’s Day. As we sipped Matcha Lattes my head started spinning as she told me about herself. In April/May she’s:

  • About to start her third year at UBC
  • Starting a 4-week pharmacy internship
  • Graced the runway for three fashion designers
  • Donated 14” of her hair to the Canadian Cancer Society
  • Won the title of Miss Asian Vancouver 2015
  • Won 1st place in two Gold and Silver level standard ballroom dance competitions
  • A math, chemistry and physics tutor for high school students
  • An Event Coordinator for a fundraising event for Nepal

As the conversation continued, she said, “Competitions are a time me to relax.”   I was perplexed because it seemed counter-intuitive. She explained school and work are intense and analytic. Dance competitions and pageants are a chance to dance, dress-up and tap into her creative side.
She also explained, “I’m super competitive!”   She’s soft-spoken, kind and makes friends easily with other contestants but her competitiveness is directed inwards on self-improvement. She uses the public spotlight to refine her dance steps, poise, presentation and communication skills.
As our interview came to a close I learned her name means beautiful in Hebrew. She enjoys 5 – 10k runs, loves superhot spicy food and plans to enter the Miss Earth and Miss Universe pageants.

Jennifer Lee Miss Chinese Vancouver 2013, My Sidewalk Shoot With…

Dec, 14th, 2014

This was a planned shoot and Jennifer has modeled before. If you attended the Miss Chinese Vancouver   charity event in December 2013 then you’ll recognize her as contestant #8 and ultimately the 1st Runner Up.   Proceeds of the event benefited the Canadian Cancer Society. The pageant is significant for Jennifer for two reasons: First she lost a close relative to cancer. Secondly, she’s been a dancer for the pageant for years. I imagine it was quite interesting to participate as a young girl then blossom into a confident contestant.
As we were discussing the details the night before the shoot, Jennifer said she owned a red dress. We both agreed it was perfectly timed for a Christmas themed photo shoot. Aside from fashion shows and charity events, Christmas parties are the perfect time to leave the rain boots behind and wear something bold. She bought her bandage style dress from a small, no-name boutique in China. She paired it with Guess heels and a Chanel purse.

Jessica Luxe, My Sidewalk Shoot With…

Nov, 16th, 2014

Jessica models for her blog Her style is to make every outfit unique and she loves experimenting with color and patterns. In a recent post she wore silver ankle boots, a patterned skirt and an oversized sweater with the sleeves cut off. Since we’re both fashionistas I thought it would be fun to collaborate. We shopped on a Saturday afternoon and our inspiration started when Jessica found a faux fur jacket. From there I paired it with a chocolate brown turtle neck sweater, olive green pants, 4” ankle boots and a matching clutch. To complete the look I suggested a Russian style fur hat (made in Italy) from Blubird on Alberni St. We shot our collaboration the next day. Jessica said the 4” boots were a compromise but otherwise she felt the look was the “best version of her!”   Meaning, it was a day where her hair, make-up and outfit were all on-point. I loved the style connection and resulting sexy look. In addition to her blog Jessica works in the financial sector and is taking marketing classes.

How Does She Look2? – Jeannie Mai Inspired Sidewalk Shoot With My Friend Nao

Dec, 21st, 2013

This was the second time I photographed my friend Nao. She has a casual, comfortable style. Click Nao’s first make over to see what she wore last month.
Since I knew her dress size and height, I did most the shopping several days in advance.
My inspiration this time was a Guess by Marciano dress Nao said was really nice. I thought, “Mmmmmm, sounds like a photo shoot opportunity to me!” She laughed and I started piecing together her next outfit. I paired the dress with a camel color wool coat to pick up the nude bands in the dress. I searched in vain for a rust or burgundy colored beret and gloves but ultimately settled for black. We picked up the heels and stockings on the day of the shoot.
Special thanks to: 1) Local designer Cindy of for providing a stylish wool coat on short notice and 2) Jackie for a natural make-up touch-up at MAC Cosmetics on Robson St.

Sep, 6th, 2012

By 9:15pm French Connection UK was largely empty but I could tell this was party central hours earlier. DJ equipment and speakers were still set up. A food and beer table was located against a side wall.
I recognized Meena and Natalie from earlier in the evening. They were co-emcees for the runway show at the CBC studio. I was able to get a couple shots before the limo whisked them away to the after party.
