How Does She Look2? – Jeannie Mai Inspired Sidewalk Shoot With My Friend Nao

Dec, 21st, 2013

This was the second time I photographed my friend Nao. She has a casual, comfortable style. Click Nao’s first make over to see what she wore last month.
Since I knew her dress size and height, I did most the shopping several days in advance.
My inspiration this time was a Guess by Marciano dress Nao said was really nice. I thought, “Mmmmmm, sounds like a photo shoot opportunity to me!” She laughed and I started piecing together her next outfit. I paired the dress with a camel color wool coat to pick up the nude bands in the dress. I searched in vain for a rust or burgundy colored beret and gloves but ultimately settled for black. We picked up the heels and stockings on the day of the shoot.
Special thanks to: 1) Local designer Cindy of for providing a stylish wool coat on short notice and 2) Jackie for a natural make-up touch-up at MAC Cosmetics on Robson St.

Sidewalk Style – Week 44 with Daphne

Oct, 30th, 2013

It’s too bad you can’t see the rain drops in the photos because I’m reminded of the Eurythmics song… “Here comes the rain again, falling on my head like a memory…” I asked Daphne what inspired her look. She said she had a preppy look in mind when she started her morning. I think she succeeded. It looks classy and smart in just the right amount. She went umbrella-less opting to wear her favorite hat instead.

Daphne’s wearing:
Hat: Banana Republic
Coat: Aritzia
Purse: Kenneth Cole
Skirt: Banana Republic

Miss America Mallory Hagan at the Deighton Cup 2013

Aug, 11th, 2013

I met Mallory Hagan, Miss America 2013 with the assistance of Lj Public Relations. We chatted for a couple minutes on Friday and Saturday and I we had a mini photo shoot. I was scheduled for a sit-down interview but due to last minute changes the answers below were provided via e-mail a few days later.
Miss America’s wearing:
Fascinator Hive Mind Millinery
Dresses Joseph Ribkoff
Q&A with Miss America
Q1- You grew up in a small town in Alabama (the southern US) then you moved to Brooklyn, NY. Numerous contrasts spring to mind. Can you
describe your initial impressions of your new home?

A1- I loved all of the culture in Brooklyn and that there were so many different nationalities represented.
Q2- Aside from Joseph Ribkoff are there any designers that make you melt inside?
A2- I love Ellie Saab and Rachel Zoe. Rachel’s clothing is so well-made and cut to perfection. I especially love her suits.
Q3- I imagine you work with a stylist for speaking engagements and social functions. Who did you select and what drew you to them?
A3- Unfortunately, Miss America does not get a stylist. I wish!
Q4- You’ve spent a substantial portion of your life competing in pageants. Now that you’ve won Miss America will you continue to compete or
will you transition into a new endeavor?

A4- The buck stops at Miss America! I will use my $50,000 in scholarship money to complete my degree in Communications at the Fashion Institute of        Technology.
Q5- Do you have any advice you would like to share with young women following in your pageant footsteps?
A5- Be yourself. It sounds so cliché, but people can spot a fake a mile away. Win being YOU!
Thanks Miss Hagan!

Sidewalk Style – Week 27 with Ivy

Jul, 6th, 2013

I met Ivy just after she walked the seawall with a girlfriend. I was pleasantly surprised because most Vancouverites walk the seawall dressed in active wear and runners. While her outfit was casual yet sexy, I was pleasantly surprised a second time when I inquired about each piece. Her blouse has French styling but she bought it in Japan. She bought her shorts in New York and she bought her sandals in Las Vegas! I asked if she was a Flight Attendant. She said, “No, I like to travel.”

Ivy’s wearing:
Hat Izzue
Purse Prada

Sidewalk Style – Week 26 with Cathy

Jun, 28th, 2013

I met Cathy as was she was making a coffee run for her office. I really liked her boots and we immediately struck up a conversation. It was Friday and she mentioned she was dressed casually. We also talked about fashion and NYC. Incidentally, her and her husband eloped in NYC!
I liked her black hat, black jacket, black belt and black boots. Her outfit reminded me of an updated 2013, chic version of Diane Keaton in the Woody Allen movie Annie Hall.
Cathy’s wearing:
Hat Chanel
Jacket Ann Demeulemeester
Necklace Jeanine Payer
Choker Chanel
Blouse Theory
Clutch Rochas
Pants November
Boots Ann Demeulemeester

Nicolette is amazing. She’s not afraid to experiment and play “dress up”. At one event she’ll wear formal sparkly silver evening dress, another time she’ll wear a dress from H&M and another time she’ll top off an outfit with a fluorescent green boa! Nicolette is a Personal Stylist and here’s a link to her blog Nicolette Lang-Andersen.
