My Sidewalk Shoot With Lina

Mar, 25th, 2016

Lina is studying Sociology in her home country of Sweden. She’s in Vancouver for a few days to visit friends. She’s never modeled and she was a little nervous yet excited about a photo shoot. She described her style as European, clean (i.e. minimalistic) and sporty. She rarely wears heels and prefers pastel colors. We went shopping she picked out the print blouse and white pants. Seeing everything together I suggested she wear her beige coat. It made the colors of her blouse pop.
We stopped at MAC Cosmetics on Robson St. to see Miss G. Within 20 she worked her magic and gave Lina a natural light makeup touch-up. She chose a red lipstick that matched to flowers in Lina’s blouse.

Blouse: W118 By Walter Baker
Pants: Pink Tartan

My Sidewalk Shoot With Seka

Feb, 21st, 2016

Seka is a few months away from earning her Masters. She works part-time in a teahouse and has never modeled. While she hinted at being uneasy about the shoot, I had no idea how deeply her feeling ran. Unbeknownst to me I put her mind at ease when I pieced together an outfit and select a location that reflected her personality. Seka spotted the vest  which became the inspiration for her outfit. To her it represented strength and professionalism. I paired it with a pink blouse  which represented her feminine side. She absolutely loved the heels and the blue grey trousers  matched the pinstripes in the vest. Unfortunately the skinny pink belt which tied the entire outfit together didn’t fit properly.
Seka is confident, articulate and likes to lead with her ideas but she’s also, stylish and feminine. After the shoot, she reflected on her initial uneasiness. Leading up to the shoot she was concerned the photos would put her in a position to be compared to the airbrushed magazine models. Also family photos somehow incorrectly capture her expression and make her appear far too serious. Lastly, she was concerned the photos would appear unnatural. Rather than cancel the shoot she said life is about personal growth and putting yourself in unique and challenging experiences. She kept the appointment and was glad she did. She has a new appreciation for all the elements (e.g. clothes, location, poses, expressions etc.) that must come together to create a memorable image. She also has new ideas for her wardrobe. Seka will soon start her practicum and enjoys spending Sunday’s with her husband.
Special thanks to Narhirah Parker for make-up!

Sidewalk Style – Week 42 With Fabiola

Oct, 16th, 2015

It was nice to see Fabiola again. We’ve met randomly a couple times on the “sidewalk” and met for a shoot once. Tonight she was on her way to her girlfriend’s housewarming party. She stopped long enough for me to capture her latest outfit.
Here’s a link to her office outfit and a link to Shoe La La.
Fabiola’s wearing:
Blouse: Isabel Marant
Pants: Joe Fresh
Heels: Zara

Canadian Election Party Colours

Oct, 13th, 2015

The Politics of Fashion
Following in the footsteps of recent United States elections, a small percentage of Canadian voters in the 2011 election chose the direction for Canada. While candidates Thomas Mulcair, Justin Trudeau, Stephen Harper & Elizabeth May did not approve this message, let’s pretend they did. Hopefully it will inspire you to vote on October 19th because it will take time to vote than it took to create this post.
Models Asel and Tanpreet invested a combined total of 9 hours. Make-up Artist/Hair Stylist Reema Mattu spent 2 hours with Tanpreet. As the Stylist, Photographer and Writer I’ve invested close to 20 hours.

Will the New Democratic Party – Orange squeeze out a victory? What if Thomas changed Queen’s iconic “We Will Rock You” chant to, “We will, we will [orange] crush you!”
Liberal – Red leader Justin is known for his boyish good looks. Justin Timberlake’s “Bringing Sexy Back” seems like the perfect dance tune to motivate workers as they rebuild our roads and infrastructure.
Rush’s “Big money goes around the world…” illustrates how the Conservatives – Blue secure trade deals as they strive to keep the economy humming.
Kermit the Frog sang, “It ain’t easy being green…” Instead imagine him encouraging you to, “Vote Green, save the environment AND eat your broccoli!”

These images were featured in the Community section of the Asian Pacific Post newspaper.
I found the following outfits for the shoot:

  • Asel is wearing a stunning orange Do+Be backless mini dress and a Jessica Simpson purse
  • Tanpreet is wearing a red H&M dress and a Ralph Lauren belt
  • Tanpreet spotted the blue Kut from the Kloth dress
  • Asel is wearing a green Jolt jacket (seen below), Willi Smith blouse, Kate Spade belt and Genetic trousers

The Politics of Fashion – Outtakes

It was a chilly, rainy day when Asel and I shot. The orange outfit wasn’t warm and her shoes (she brought from home) were not comfortable. Despite all that Asel was amazing!  She arrived on time, she was engaged and only sent a couple text messages during the entire shoot. Unlike most attractive women that simply rely on their looks to sell the shot, Asel had an emotional content along with a variety of poses. It all helped bring my ideas to life! I had so many outtakes, I had to share them with you!
Incidentally, Asel is an Interior Design graduate. While she seeks a job in her field of study she has two jobs and models part-time for PLY Management.

Sidewalk Style, Tucson AZ – Week 40 With Jaime

Oct, 3rd, 2015

Terracotta, adobe, Mi Casa Su Casa… It’s all part of Southwestern architecture. The Pueblo Revival style is shown above.

Jaime’s a bit casually dressed for SidewalkRunway. However, when the temperature reaches 95F (35C) comfort is essential. The inspiration for her outfit actually came from her blouse. She wanted to wear a grey backless top but her job’s dress code required something more modest. As her second choice she picked her back blouse. She then paired it with wide legged pants she received as a gift from her family in Texas. Jaime’s electric smile will serve her well as a future journalist.
Jaime is wearing a pair of Kendra Scott earrings. They are also featured in the image above. For the month of October, each time a pair of her earrings are purchased, Kendra Scott will gift a pair of earrings to a woman diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.
Jaime’s wearing:
Blouse: Naked Zebra
Pants: Lucy & Laurel

Sidewalk Style – Week 39 With Karey

Sep, 26th, 2015

I first met Karey in late August. Click Vampy Bohemian to see her first outfit.
Despite the sunny weather, it was chilly and windy. Today Karey was experimenting and pulled together an outfit she could at the office on a Casual Friday. She opted for her high waisted skinny jeans paired with a structured blazer. After that it was easy for her to add accessories and shoes.
Karey is 4′ 11″ (150 cm) and wears a size 3 shoe. Needless to say she finds shopping a challenge. For that reason she’s motivated and inspired to start her own petite clothing line. She has a great sense of style so I’ll be interested once she begins to create her collection.
Headband: Forever 21
Blazer: Bebe
Blouse: Banana Republic
Skinny Jeans: “Leigh” Top Shop
Heels: Found at a vintage boutique

Sidewalk Style – Week 38 With Melissa

Sep, 13th, 2015

A lovely smile and a statement necklace
The full package!
The ankle strap lock matches the lock on her purse
The black & grey stripes match her pumps and necklace
Her fingernail polish matches her jacket

Minimalist Details
I met Melissa, her husband and daughter at the Luxury & Super Car Weekend. Her favorite vehicle the Rolls Royce Wraith.
I loved the subtle details that made up her outfit. There were so many nice touches, I added photo captions. She built her outfit around her summery white blazer. Her shiny burgundy pants were a nod to fall. From there she added a necklace, purse and a pair of “must have” black pumps. She said her outfit made her feel “confident, classic and stylish with a dash of sexy.”
To my surprise her shiny pants were NOT leather or pleather, they were died denim! She said denim is more flattering and tends to hold its shape better that leather. Her jeans are brand new so we’re both wondering how shiny they will be after several washing machine cycles.
Lastly, Melissa is a Event Director.

Blazer: Zara
Pants: BCBG
Purse: Alberto Bellucci

Sidewalk Style – Week 37 With Sierly

Sep, 12th, 2015

I spotted Sierly amid the crowd of women wearing outfits destined for the Granville St. nightclubs. She was originally wearing a cream colored sweater jacket. When I asked if I could take her photo, she took off her sweater and gave me several strong modeling poses like a pro! What a pleasant surprise! I would have loved five more minutes but her husband and girlfriend were waiting patiently. Awesome mani/pedi by the way!
Sierly’s wearing:
Blouse & Pants: Aritzia
Heels: Michael Kors
