I met Anna at 11:30am and we shopped till 1:00pm. The first outfit we tried was a tan sweater dress. It fit nice but it was something commonly seen on the “sidewalk”.

The next outfit was a pair of wide leg, knit pants with funky metallic patterns and a fuzzy jacket. Unfortunately the idea didn’t work.

When Anna tried on the forest green shift dress she said she preferred fitted dresses. However, it matched her personal style of classy and elegant so that was our choice for the shoot. Next I paired it with black pair of heels and a purse. By 2:30pm we were ready to shoot.

In addition to modeling part-time Anna was recently crowned Miss Russia in a local pageant. When she modeled in her home country her favorite assignments were bridal shows. She said the long elegant, flowing gowns made her feel like a princess.

Chade (pronounced Char-day) has modeled occasionally to help friends but she works as a Freelance Fashion Stylist.

For our shoot Chade chose to wear her ChicWish dress (for the first time). She said the floral print was bold but not too overpowering. It made her feel classy and feminine. She added that it reminded her of a 1950’s Hollywood garden party. I added a red structured purse as a finishing touch.

Mina celebrated her birthday earlier this week. Happy Birthday!

Within a few days she’ll be heading to India to audition for the Miss Universe India 2015 pageant.   Incidentally, organizers are permitting non-resident women of Indian heritage to compete this year.

To date, Mina’s local, national and international experience includes but is not limited to:

  • CFL Cheerleader for the BC Lions
  • Miss Asian Pacific Canada 2013 – Seoul, Korea
  • Miss Universe Canada 2014
  • World’s Next Top Model 2014

She views the opportunity as an honor to represent Indo-Canadian women. Mina wasn’t sure of how many other non-residents have been selected internationally. However, she told me organizers have picked 100 contestants by travelling to every state in India.

The September 20th audition  will select 20 contestants to vie for the title on the Miss Diva  reality TV show. Contestants will be presented with daily challenges and one woman will be eliminated each episode until Miss Universe India is crowned.

Lastly, Mina is 1st generation Indo-Canadian. She was born on Vancouver Island, travelled to India once before and she’s fluent in English, Punjabi and Hindi. She has a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Sociology from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. When invited to speak, she enjoys using her pageant platform to encourage young girls to pursue their dreams and passions alongside their careers.

Shayna Ding Miss Asian Vancouver 2015, My Sidewalk Shoot With…

May, 6th, 2015

For the short time I’ve known Shayna I’ve always seen her with long flowing waist length hair.

When she told me she was about to cut her hair I suggested a before & after shoot. It was an important enough event that shouldn’t be left to selfies. I took the day off from work, Shayna cleared her schedule for a few hours and luckily the weather cooperated.

We stopped at Milliner, Dominique Hanke’s house and borrowed an outfit that graced the runway at Eco Fashion Week. Then we stopped at Aldo shoes on Robson St. to pick up a pair of sexy heeled sandals and a matching clutch to complete the look.

Kaila So, My Sidewalk Shoot With…

May, 3rd, 2015

Kaila is a Mercedes Benz Model Search finalist (2nd Runner-up and Audience favorite). She currently works as a Modeling Coach, a Social Etiquette Instructor and an Image Consultant. Students typically enroll in her modeling course prior to auditions. Examples of where her students have graced the stage include:

  • Finalists:
    • ITM North American Model Search
    • Miss Universe Canada
    • Miss Chinese Vancouver
  • Placements:
    • Sunshine Nations 2013, Mr. Adirel Tam
    • Miss World Canada 2014, 3rd Place, Taylor Jotie

Her social etiquette classes help students with social and workplace interactions. Clients seek her image consulting advice when they are ready to revamp their wardrobe.

I was pleased to collaborate with Kaila and share a few basic tips that will help the next time you’re posing for photos.

Instead of using a selfie smile when someone else is holding the camera think of fun times with family or friends.   This will help create a natural smile. Also, don’t be afraid to slightly vary each pose below. Remember, you can always delete the unflattering images!

Natural smiles come from within!
Hand gently placed, fingers relaxed and slightly spread
Weight is placed on her left leg, hips & shoulders slightly turned
Legs crossed and she’s created a nice diagonal line
Feet form a “V” and she’s created a nice hourglass shape
Knees touching, right heel raised and she’s created a nice “S” shape

Sidewalk Shoot – My Friend Vienna

Apr, 26th, 2015

On April 11th 10 contestants competed for the title of Miss Asian Vancouver at the Rosemont Georgia Hotel.

Contestants wore fitness wear, day wear by Rimpy Sahota and evening wear by Karmn. Contestants created handcrafted items for an auction held during the pageant. Proceeds were donated to breast cancer. Contestants also performed on stage during a talent segment.

When the winners were announced, Vienna was one of the six contestants whose name was not called. Given the time the contestants invested for: team rehearsals, individual performances and creating auction items, I was pleasantly surprised by her response. She said,

“Yes, I felt sad [I didn’t win] but the goal was to raise money for breast cancer and we raised a ton of money!”   She continued, “I never competed before but I felt a sense of accomplishment. It took courage to send in my photo, to walk down the runway and to perform.” Incidentally, Vienna and her mother created Jade earrings and a bracelet with Swarovski crystals. Her jewelry was auctioned for $1,200!

As she reflected on the experience she said during rehearsals she became friends with the other contestants. I asked if she would enter another pageant and said she would consider it provided it had a charity component. As the conversation moved beyond the pageant I learned Vienna is a NY Film Academy graduate. She’s lived in London for 1.5 years and traveled through Europe and Africa. I was impressed when she said she rode a camel in the Sahara desert!   Vienna is currently taking marketing classes and enjoys playing the drums.

Miss MySkyeBerryPie 2015 is Crowned

Apr, 19th, 2015

The first Miss SkyeBerryPie was crowned during the Miss Asian Vancouver Charity Gala at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia on April 11th. Miss SkyeBerryPie is the newest dimension to the mySkyeBerryPie.com online lifestyle boutique.

Founder Skye Natasha Lintott selected Deborah Yuen from a field of 10 contestants. Early in a pageant, Skye was struck by Deborah’s naturalness and quiet humble confidence. When I met with Deborah a week after the show she mentioned it was her first time speaking and performing in front of an audience. She confessed her legs were shaking just before she went on stage.   Once on stage she said, “I went with the flow and did the best I could.” For the talent portion Deborah played the Guzheng. The pageant also included fitness wear, day wear (by Rimpy Sahota) and evening wear (by Karmn). Contestants also created handcrafted items that were then auctioned to raise money for breast cancer.

When it comes to fashion, modeling, health and beauty Skye has a wealth of experience. However the messenger can be just as important as the message so Skye chose Deborah (19 years old) to connect with her younger viewers. Her duties have yet to be defined but it will involve volunteering and speaking at charity fundraisers   supported mySkyeBerryPie. Deborah will also be a runway model   for the site’s online store as well as local up and coming designers sponsored by mySkyeBerryPie. As Deborah settles into her new role, Skye begin mentoring Deborah. In turn Skye hopes that Deborah will one day mentor other girls.

Deborah entered the Miss Asian Vancouver contest as a suggestion by her mother. She is currently attending classes to become a make-up artist. After graduation she would like to travel to Japan and England to receive specialized training. Deborah also enjoys exercising and having lunch with her father on Sundays.

Deborah played “A Moonlit Night on the Spring River”

Chloe mentioned it was the second time in a week that a Fashion Blogger took her photo! I wish I could have seen her first outfit. Today I loved the way her shift dress swayed to and fro with every step. I asked about her inspiration and she said she wanted to wear something comfortable and simple. We both agreed it’s easy to create a nice look from basic pieces, provided you know how to mix & match. I like how Chloe’s burgundy color dress complemented her skin tone. I also like how her black hair matched her heels and purse. Each element is understated but overall it looks great!
