Photographer’s Notes:

These photos were taken in late January. We collaborated with the hope one photo would be selected for a promotional concert poster. As of late April organizers selected a photo from another photographer. I understand a brown color pallet weighed heavily in the decision making process. The concert poster features a flattering head shot of Natalie framed with a gold border against a brown background.

Special thanks to Nathirah Parker for hair and make-up.

I’m excited to attend the concert!

Emma Dunlavey’s “Curve” VIP Exhibit At Leone

May, 27th, 2016

I feel grateful for a comfortable lifestyle however I’m not sure how long my disposable income would last if I became addicted to Leone! It was my first time in the luxury store (757 W. Hastings) and I was in awe! All of the major fashion names were present: Georgio Armani, Alexander McQueen, Versace, Prada, Miu Miu, Dior, Carolina Herrera etc.

The building’s high arch ceilings and lighting were very flattering. It was so soft and even, I rarely used my flash during the event! The building has upper and lower floors but I spent the entire evening on the main level.

The invitation only event ran from 6-9:00 pm and was hosted by LuvnGrace (Vernard). Leone offered guests 30-50% off various Spring/Summer collections. Money raised from photography sales of the Curve exhibit would benefit the Beauty Night Society charity organization.

Brought to you by…

I’ve been on a dark chocolate kick and I’ve found low sugar bars with 70, 80 and 90% cocoa content. The name Zimt caught my eye the last time I was at Whole Foods. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to meet Emma, the Owner and Founder of Zimt Chocolates. I’ll have to buy a bar next time I’m grocery shopping. Emma was partnered with Janice who also specializes in raw and organic ingredients.

Barry has been a busy guy. I’ve seen him or his Winestain’s representatives at the Couturist Opening, the Mine & Your Opening, the Cincino Opening and the Chali Rosso Art Gallery! My favorite event was a wine tasting (when I didn’t have my camera).

The Indian fusion appetizers were tasty but vanished almost as soon as Babita appeared with her silver platter. Hopefully next time Raj (her husband) will lend a hand! However, at the end of the evening he did treat the Valets standing out front.

For the benefit of…

Skye gave a brief opening and reminded everyone how many women have been touched by domestic violence. While the subject was not raised tonight, Pamela Anderson is a domestic abuse survivor.

Click RAW to view 20+ photos from Pam and Emma’s visit in September.

If you’re older you’ll probably remember Pam in Baywatch  and if you’re younger you’ll probably remember her involvement with PETA. At any rate, Emma photographed Pam and created a coffee table book named “RAW”. For tonight’s event she graciously enlarged eight images as large as 30″x 4 5″! They are limited edition prints ranging in price from $2,000 – $3,000.

A portion of each photo sold will be used to provide a woman from the downtown east side with a lifestyle makeover. The Beauty Night Society Mission Statement states, “Beauty Night builds self-esteem and changes lives of women and youth living in poverty through 3 streams of programming: wellness, life skills development and makeovers.” Emma has also offered her photography skills to capture the transformation.

Caroline is a bit casually dressed for SidewalkRunway but there was something about her knee high stockings and ponytail that attracted my attention. Her inspiration for her outfit was comfort. She was heading to work and chose flats because she would be standing for most of her shift. She’s wearing a “two color” outfit but each piece came from a different store.

Hannah Middleton Swim 2016 Fashion Show

May, 17th, 2016

I’ve been to many fashion shows over several years and rarely have I seen someone (and her team) pull-off such an amazing feat on their first attempt. Hannah Middleton’s 2016 collection gave me a new way to think of swimwear. A Middle Eastern thread ran through the entire event. Some models wore nose rings while others had henna painted hands. Even the names of the suits had Arabic sounding names. The lighting was flawless at certain points on the runway and the models and their makeup were amazing.

Josie created the elaborate decorations for the mailing list drop box.

Seen Before the Show

Hannah unveiled 30 pieces of her 2016 collection at Granville Island’s Performance Works. Despite the warm sunny weather tempting people to remain outside, the turnout was quite good. Guests mixed, mingled and sipped drinks until the performance hall doors opened at 7:30pm. Quite a few women opted for the complementary henna hand painting.  Others posed for photos in front of the media wall.

The raised runway formed the shape of the letter X. A small platform was thoughtfully reserved for Media at the ends of both runways. At 8:30pm the DJ asked everyone to take their seats. The lights dimmed and the show started with a belly dance routine. For a brief moment she stood motionless while she moved her abdominal muscles to the beat of the music!  The audience loved the performance. Primed and ready the fashion show began without delay.

The Malakiy’ya Collection

Hailey Afton Porter,  also known as Evan Clayton’s runway muse has begun designing jewelry. If you look closely, you’ll notice the models are wearing handmade, body chain jewelry that wonderfully complements Hannah’s swimwear.

This collection was a sophisticated mix of tiny bits of fabric magically held together with intricate lacing.  A suit that appeared one way from the front looked different from the side and quite different from the back. It didn’t take long for the audience to begin cheering as certain suits appeared. I was particularly drawn to the Amira and the Rasha.

It’s worth noting the model’s skin tones ranged from creamy white to coco brown to dark chocolate. They ranged in size from petite to pleasingly plump!

Hannah Speaks

I’ve had the opportunity to interview Hannah and feature one of her 2015 suits on my blog.

Click Nakita for the beach shoot and click Laura for the Ring Girl shoot.

At the end of the first collection, Hannah used video clip to introduce herself to the audience. She mentioned she handpicked all the models so they would reflect the diversity of life. For inspiration she drew on her childhood when she and her family lived briefly in Turkey. Also, she was unapologetic about the daring designs  meant to grab attention at the pool, beach or boat deck.

The Empire Collection

These pieces looked a more like the traditional two piece bikinis. However crisscross patterns, brightly colored trim and backless designs offered guests a different perspective. I really liked the high waisted and geometrical patterns on the Amoura. However, my favorite was the super sexy, ‘barely there’ Haifa.

Kayana – Bandeau top and choker with Brazilian bottoms
Mahta – Drop down waist detail and thong bottoms
Ashia – Multi-cage top and…

Haifa – Two piece with choker and…

After the runway show ended I was struck by how comfortable the models were in their swimwear. They easily mixed and mingled with the audience, family and friends. They posed for photos and everyone gradually made their way to the after party at the Sand Bar.

The White Effect – Fashion Show & Gala Event

May, 14th, 2016

The White Effect (and the Red Effect before it) were fashion events where everyone arrived wearing the color of the event’s title. It was enjoyable to see the variety of outfits.

Shannon bought her dress earlier that afternoon at Nordstrom. She paired it with black heels. Ladies typically wore a variety of gowns and body con dresses paired with white, nude and silver color heels. Guys had more of a challenge wearing all white so we tended to complement our outfits with grey, black or khaki.

Early in the evening I had to race home and sadly missed the first two designers of the fashion show. The remaining three designers presented approximately five pieces each. Fatima Nasserzadeh presented during the Red Effect and Teresa Farese presented her pieces at Vancouver Fashion Week. The fashion shows were brief considering the line-up of singing and dance performances.

The venue is architecturally stunning. However, the glass and concrete collected the heat (even on a cloudy day). I found myself outside cooling off and missed Marilou Cantrell’s singing performance.

In between performances the Jazz Aces did a great job of jazzing-up pop songs. Pink Thai provided appetizers which quickly disappeared. Pink Ladies Event Planning brought a two tiered butter cream wedding cake but if was for display only.

The event was held at the Waterfall Building and organized by David Guembhyt Jr., Hot Republic and HR Events. The fashion show was organized by Savanna Franklyn, Pipikini: House of Fashion.

Fashion Show Excerpts

Sadly I missed the first two designers Lu Liu and Heng Hsuan Lee. However, each designer sent 3 – 5 pieces down the runway. I’ve featured highlights from the remaining three designers.

Couturist Grand Opening 1085 Robson St.

May, 7th, 2016

Fashionistas Pam & Linda attending the grand opening

The weather was perfect for a grand opening. It was warm, sunny and lots of people were strolling along Robson St.

James and Alice stepped outside to greet people with Couturist post cards.

Chin soon followed with a tray of bite sized brownies, coconut balls and croissants.

However the promise of red, white and sparkling wine seemed to be the most effective means to encourage shy Vancouverites to step inside.

Just inside the door, DJ Eddie Rolando had his digital turntables and laptop set up. The upbeat dance music could have been much louder but I guess Bland-couver has a regulation against playing music that can be heard from from the sidewalk.

Alice alternated between outside and inside. Inside she resumed her role as bartender and spokesperson for Winestains. Juice and sparking water were also served. In a moment of creativity I asked for glass of red and Prosecco. The mixture was quite tasty, dry yet bubbly.

A steady stream of walk in customers visited throughout the afternoon. I recognized several people from various fashion events while others were friends of Vicky and Riko’s.

This highlight of the afternoon came from the winner of the $100 gift certificate. Read below to see what happened!
