Fiona has modeled for her photographer friends in Taiwan. As we were planning this shoot, she chose to express her “Sidewalk” style with an outfit from her wardrobe. She liked her sarong from Singapore and her 5” heels from Taiwan. When I inquired about the designer’s names she mentioned clothing labels are less important in most Asian countries. She prefers to shop in her home country for several reasons. First, she’s 5’7”   when she’s wearing 5” heels and finds more selection for her size. Lastly, she also finds unique designs and better prices. In Vancouver she’s focusing her efforts on her Travel Management classes.

I recently had an opportunity to shoot with Zara Durrani while she was in Vancouver. She’s the owner of Inspired Life Productions. She’s also the Executive Producer and Host of “Life & Style with Zara” (2011 – 2012), a yogi, an actress and a model. If you look closely at the Lotus Eye fashion show gallery, you’ll see Zara with a cute pixie haircut!

To be perfectly honest, she arrived on the day of the shoot wearing rain boots and big coat! It was much warmer when we picked her outfit. Our inspiration started with a frosted white trench coat I found at Blubird on Alberni St. I paired it with a clear umbrella. The next day I met Zara at Malary’s Fashion Network in Surrey/Cloverdale. There she found a red shift dress and Yvonne, the Owner suggested a black clutch. We felt like
we had a glamorous Raincouver look.

At the end of April Zara will be heading to sunny Los Angeles to teach yoga at a weekend retreat.

Sahika (pronounced sha HE ka) is a true sweetheart. But when she arrived wearing a black leather jacket I was anxious to create a bad girl look. We headed to Mine & Yours boutique and found the perfect leather skirt. Sahika has performed on stage as an actress and dancer but she modeled for me as a favor. She’ll be attending an Event Management program in the Fall to supplement her bachelor’s degree. PS. Sahika doesn’t smoke. The cigarette was a prop for the shoot!

Anatomy of a Photo Shoot

Tukwila is an independent model from Seattle. Yes, Tukwila is her real name (it means “land of hazelnuts” in the Coastal Salish First Nations’ language). I met her and her husband Leonard at Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) in October 2013. Tukwila “walked” for several designers during the Spring/Summer show.

09:00pm Saturday – We met by coincidence at a coffee shop in downtown Vancouver. She was here to “walk” for several VFW Fall/Winter designers.
11:00pm Tukwila got approval from her designer to arrive at 1:30pm Sunday for hair & makeup.

10:15am Sunday – We meet downtown to shop for two outfits.
11:20am    Our arms are filled with three outfits, several blouses and skirts.
11:30am    Panic is starting to set in. Time is running short and we don’t have a killer outfit yet.
11:40am    We agree to find one look instead of two (because she won’t have time to change).
11:45am    Tukwila starts trying on 12 different pieces. Some fit, some don’t, some don’t look well together. Sigh…
11:50am    We all like the skirt Leonard found. I found a blouse and two fitted blazers. Things look promising!
11:55am    I found heels and purse. We now have a killer outfit.
11:57am    Tukwila, Leonard and I liked the smart, classy, “Springy” look of the outfit.
12:00pm    We raced out of the store for the nearest Starbucks so Tukwila could change.
     12:05pm    We start shooting.
01:10pm We finish shooting and we say goodbye.

Tukwila is a modern day renaissance woman. In addition of being an independent model, she has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts for dance, she leads a small dance troupe and she’s Owner of a green friendly cleaning company.
